I’m not always wearing a pretty bra, but that’s my face. Having a kinda funny (to me) dialogue on Instagram that started when I said I was surprised at how many people incorrectly use “your” and “you’re” and now it’s on to telling women to smile. Let me give y’all a hint. Don’t tell women to smile. Or to do anything else with their face. Most men don’t mean anything by it, but you should know that all women hate it. Most will just take it on the outside and quietly wince on the inside… but others of us will speak up. This example might help illustrate why we don’t like it: the dairy delivery guy for a restaurant I worked at for many years, would come in twice a week and say “you’re so much prettier when you smile” and after a while, I finally asked “why do you care what I’m doing with my face?” and he looked confused. I said “I am over here working, in chef clothes and no makeup, doing my job. Does it look like I’m trying to be pretty or impress someone? I’m only concerned with the work I’m doing. Does anyone ever tell YOU what to do with YOUR face?!” He looked very taken aback and I just shrugged my shoulders. Men- how often does someone tell you to smile? I would genuinely like to know.
